How to avoid getting scammed on Carousell/Facebook Marketplace?

What are your red flags when dealing with sellers on these platforms? I'm always scared of getting a fake item or the seller disappearing after I pay. What are your tips for a safe transaction?

Rule #1: If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is. A brand new iPhone for RM500? Scam.

Always check the seller's profile. Look for reviews, ratings, and how long they've been on the platform. A brand new account selling expensive items is a huge red flag.

Insist on Cash on Delivery (COD) or using the platform's official payment system (like Carousell Protection). Never do a direct bank transfer to a personal account.

Ask for more pictures or even a short video of the item. Scammers often use stock photos from the internet.

When meeting up for COD, always choose a safe, public place like a mamak or inside a mall. Never go to a private house or a secluded area.

Be wary of sellers who pressure you to make a quick decision or to communicate outside the app (e.g., 'WhatsApp me for faster deal').
